Hi, I'm John-Christian

John-Christian Jacques

I specialise in unit stills, portraiture and performance photography, although I have been told I do some rather nice landscape, travel, and wildlife work too.

I’ve been a professional photographer snapping film, music, dance, and drama related subjects for over 37 years now, from Pete Townshend and Robert Palmer, to English Festival Ballet and Momix, to Peter Ustinov and Catherine Zeta Jones. As a boy I decided I wanted to work in the film industry after seeing Chita Rivera, Shirley Maclaine, & Paula Kelly sing “There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This” in the film Sweet Charity. And there was, being a film creative.

My Bio

A little about my time as a photographer.

Well, Pete Townshend made me a cup of tea only months out of college. My shots of his band Deep End ended up on the Brixton Concert album cover.

I started with a Bell & Howell 8mm cine camera but I’ve been shooting Nikon ever since.

I photographed Catherine Zeta Jones when she was just 15.

Shot lots of Theatre around London, along with tons of music gigs.

I’ve shot advertising photos for the London Festival Ballet.

I wrote a play and toured it across the Canadian Fringe Festivals.

I produced short drama films and documentaries for charity.

I’ve taught photography and enjoyed passing it forward.

I like to ride my mountain bike, play guitar, and I really must start playing my Sax again.

The Canadian Rockies, Iceland, Morroco and Gozo were my favourite places to travel to.

I’m half English, half Belgian.

Highlights from John-Christian

Sir Peter Ustinov. He was probably the most famous actor I had photographed at the time. His reputation preceded him. Intelligent, funny, and didn’t suffer fools gladly. So I was a little nervous and intimitated at first but it soon became obvious he liked to tell tales while being photographed. He was so animated I didn’t need to give him much direction. They were great stories, witty, interesting, and unusual. All told with an amazing cast of characters. The trouble was I had to get a serious photo of him too, preferably not talking. So, interupting politely, I said “Mr Ustinov, do you mind if I call you Peter?”. “Not at all.” came the reply. “Peter, could you stop talking so I can get at least one serious photo of you.” He gave me a look, then smiled, then obliged perfectly posing serenely like the professional he was.
